Tips

ISO

Auto ISO available under ISO Sensitivity Settings → Auto ISO Sensitivity Control. Set a max ISO of 3200 or 6400 and a minimum shutter speed for best results.

Aperture

In A mode the camera sets the shutter speed automatically. In M mode, rear dial controls shutter speed, front dial controls aperture.

Switch from the default 'auto-area' autofocus to 'single-point' AF mode so you decide exactly where the camera focuses, giving you far more creative control over your shots.

Keep your ISO at 1600 or below for clean, sharp images — the D7000 handles these settings beautifully, and you can push to 3200 in a pinch without worrying too much about quality.

Turn on Active D-Lighting when shooting in high-contrast situations like bright outdoor scenes, as it helps preserve detail in both the bright highlights and dark shadows of your JPEG files.

Apply a small amount of sharpening either in-camera through the Picture Control settings or afterwards in editing software, since the camera produces slightly soft images at its default sharpening level.

Use the built-in flash as a wireless commander to trigger external Nikon speedlights — this lets you experiment with off-camera lighting setups without needing expensive extra equipment.

Enable the auto ISO feature and set a maximum limit of 3200 to let the camera intelligently manage exposure in changing light without allowing noise levels to get out of hand.

Use the interval timer feature to create time-lapse sequences — it's a fun and creative way to capture slow-moving subjects like clouds or sunsets that aren't possible with a single shot.
